Midwinter Up Close

An all-inclusive trip to the remote valley Haukadalur for winter experience in Iceland.

 

Day 1

Pickup in Reykjavik. Drive to Haukadalur via Borgarnes, for refreshments and visit the Settlement center.  A welcoming dinner at Giljaland.  Stargazing / Relaxing in the hot tub at Giljaland.

 

Day 2

Out in the dark!  A hike in the total darkness, experiencing the sun slowly emerging.  Midwinter lunch.  Outdoor activities in Haukadalur.  Optional visit to Eiriksstaðir longhouse – storytelling by the fire.  Typical Icelandic midwinter dinner.  Relaxing and stargazing in the hot tub.

 

Day 3

Goodbye breakfast.  Departing to Reykjavik via Borgarnes, for a visit to Ljómalind farmers market

 

Highlights: Settlement center in Borgarnes, Haukadalur valley, Eiriksstaðir, Icelandic midwinter tradition and food, possibly northern lights.

Christmas up close

An all-inclusive trip to the remote valley Haukadalur for Christmas experience with Icelandic families.

 

 

Day 1 – 22nd of December

Pickup in Reykjavik.  Drive to Haukadalur via Borgarnes, for refreshments and a trip to the Settlement center.  A welcoming dinner at Giljaland. Stargazing in the hot tub at Giljaland.

 

Day 2 – 23rd of December. 

Breakfast with a Christmas twist.  A trip to Snæfellsnes peninsula, Stykkishólmur, Kirkjufell and Djúpalónssandur.  Traditional 23rd dinner.  Singing and tasting all things fishy.  The fish skata is traditional for a dinner that night, it is fermented and strong smelling.  Some of us like it, but some of us just want bacalao.

 

Day 3 – 24th of December

Breakfast with a Christmas twist.  Decorating the Christmas tree at Jörvi – Christmas songs and cosy time

A typical pre-Christmas lunch at Giljaland.  Outdoor activities in Haukadalur.  Cooking the wild game for Christmas Eve dinner / free time.  Christmas Eve dinner: Wild ptarmigan and duck, rice pudding with the traditional almond for dessert.  Gift time – the classical high peak of Christmas in Iceland.

 

 

Day 4 – 25th of December

Holiday breakfast.  Visit a sheep farm.  Festive lunch at Giljaland.  Outdoor activities in Haukadalur.  Optional visit to Eiriksstaðir longhouse – storytelling by the fire.  Home dinner at Jörvi – traditional local smoked lamb and varieties of tastes of Iceland.  Stargazing in the hot tub at Giljaland.

 

Day 5, 26th of December

Goodbye breakfast.  Departing to Reykjavik via Borgarnes, for a visit to the Ljómalind farmers market.

New Year up close

An all-inclusive trip to the remote valley Haukadalur for New years’ experience with Icelandic families.

 

 

Day 1 – 29nd of December

Pickup in Reykjavik area.  Drive to Haukadalur via Borgarnes, a trip to the Settlement center.  A welcoming dinner at Giljaland.  Stargazing / Relaxing in the hot tub at Giljaland

 

Day 2 – 30th of December

Breakfast with a festive twist.  A trip to Snæfellsnes peninsula, Stykkishólmur, Kirkjufell and Djúpalónssandur, lunch included.  Festive dinner. 

 

Day 3 – 31st of December

Breakfast with a festive twist.  Songs and cosy time in the hot tub.  A typical “last day of the year” lunch at Giljaland.  Outdoor activities in Haukadalur.  Cooking the wild game for New Year’s Eve dinner / free time

18.00 New Year’s Eve dinner: Reindeer, duck, local ice cream.  Bonfire at Jörvi

 

Day 4 – 1st of January

Holiday breakfast.  Visit to a local farm.  Festive lunch at Giljaland.  Outdoor activities in Haukadalur.  Optional visit to Eiriksstaðir longhouse – storytelling and cosy time by the fire.  Dinner at Jörvi – traditional local smoked lamb and varieties of tastes of Iceland.  Stargazing in the hot tub at Giljaland
